Christian Bale won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role on Sunday for his role in "The Fighter," marking the actor's first win and nomination.

He beat John Hawkes of "Winter's Bone," Mark Ruffalo of "The Kids Are All Right," Jeremy Renner of "The Town" and Geoffrey Rush of "The King's Speech."

"The Fighter" tells of real-life boxer "Irish" Micky Ward, portrayed by Mark Wahlberg, and how his brother Dicky Eklund, played by Bale, helped him before he went pro in the mid 1980s. Amy Adams plays Ward's love interest, a cocktail waitress named Charlene.

The film has been nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture. Bale won a Golden Globe in January for his performance in "The Fighter."
